ONLINE SUMMER SCHOOL IN OSTEOARCHAEOLOGY AND PALEOPATHOLOGY

The summerschool will take place regularly in the online mode.

The Summer School in Osteoarchaeology and Paleopathology Online Edition is an academic program offered by the University of Pisa aimed at training students in anthropological and paleopathological methods and topics. It is an outstanding opportunity for students to gain knowledge in bioarchaeological investigation from an immersive online course, which is the most suitable learning modality imposed by the COVID pandemic.

OFFERED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF PISA

The school is designed to provide all attendees with a basic knowledge about the analysis of ancient human skeletal remains. Biological profile reconstruction and paleopathological study are aimed at obtaining the greatest possible amount of information on the environment, lifestyle, and diseases that afflicted past populations.

The lectures will be held entirely online through Microsoft Teams.

Credits

  • 7 undergraduate credits (ECTS) through the University of Pisa
  • Certificate of attendance from the University of Pisa

The Summer School will take place from June 20 to July 8, 2022

The lectures will be taken for 3 weeks for about 3-4 hours per day (52 hours in total) with a timetable that will be established on the basis of the time zone of the attendees.

The official language of the Summer School is English and no knowledge of Italian is required.

  • Bone diagenesis and taphonomy
  • Skeletal anatomy
  • Tooth structure and identification
  • Methods for sex determination
  • Methods for age determination in adults
  • Age determination in subadults
  • Anthropometric measurements
  • Stature calculation and osteometric indices
  • Ergonomy
  • Paleopathology: traumatic lesions, non specific infections, dento-alveolar diseases, tuberculosis, treponematosis, leprosy, stress markers, tumors, metabolic diseases, degenerative joint diseases, congenital diseases.

Cost

EUR 750.00

The University of Pisa will sponsor one grant of 750 euro (alternatively, one grant of 500 and one grant of 250 euro) reserved to students coming from developing Countries.

How to apply

Summer and Winter Schools are open to university students and young professionals. You are required to go through the following procedural steps:

  1. REGISTRATION: connect to UNIPI’s Alice portal and register. Each step you need to take in order to complete your registration on Alice is widely outlined in the Summer/Winter School “How to apply” Tutorial available in the Attachments at the bottom of this webpage. Please read it carefully and follow the instructions step by step.
  2. DOCUMENTS: after registration on the Alice portal, the system will give you a username and you will choose a password. Before proceeding to the next step, make sure you have the following documents:
    • Identity Document (*PASSPORT in case you are a foreign student*)
    • Enrolment Form (the Enrolment Form is available in the Attachments at the bottom of this webpage. You are due to fill in the form and SIGN IT TWICE, in both areas marked “Sign here”, as it is stated in the document itself; you will upload it on the portal when required)
    • Curriculum Vitae
    • Any other document which might be required by the Summer/Winter School you decided to enrol in (if that is the case, such documents will be specified on the Summer/Winter School webpage)
    • All the documents must be in pdf format, in order to upload them on the portal when required.
  3. ENROLMENT: after the registration, you can enrol in the Summer/Winter School you would like to attend. The Enrolment Process is outlined in the Summer/Winter School “How to apply” Tutorial available in the Attachments at the bottom of this webpage.

Please note that you are not required to have an italian tax code and a residence permit to enrol in summer/winter schools.
